How J.P. Morgan Asset Management uses AI

J.P. Morgan Asset Management builds AI tools into Spectrum, its in-house investment platform, and groups them under the name SpectrumIQ. Reported tools include SpectrumGPT, which drafts research notes from the firm's own research archive, and Moneyball, which shows portfolio managers how their past decisions played out. Staff also use JPMorgan's firmwide LLM Suite assistant.

Reported results

  • Mary Callahan Erdoes said some analysts reported getting 2 to 4 hours back in their day from AI tools, according to Financial Planning's report of the May 2024 investor day. Source
  • Financial Planning reported that JPMorgan said AI-assisted sales revenue in the division rose 188% from 2022 to 2023. Source

Tamarly Research conclusion

J.P. Morgan Asset Management treats AI as a layer inside its own investment platform rather than a separate product: SpectrumGPT, Smart Monitor and Moneyball all sit in Spectrum and serve portfolio managers who still make the decisions. The wider division has published time savings of 2 to 4 hours a day for some analysts and a 188% rise in AI-assisted sales revenue, but no figures for investment results. The open question is whether tools such as Moneyball, which review past decisions, change how portfolios are run; the firm has not yet shown that they do.
